The project context file
Every new chat starts from zero unless something carries the context forward. OpenPrompt writes that context to a file in each folder a project owns, and keeps it current.
Where it lives
At .openprompt/OpenPrompt.context.mdc in every folder a project owns. It sits in a hidden directory with its own .gitignore, so it never shows up as a file change or in your commits.
What is in it
- Your instructions for the project.
- Recent prompts, with the files each one changed.
- The key files to read.
How it stays current
OpenPrompt refreshes it automatically as you work. There is nothing to regenerate by hand.
Using it with your agents
It is plain markdown inside the project, so any agent that can read the project’s files can be pointed at it. In Agent Mode, Smart Enhance rewrites a draft prompt with the same project instructions; Quick Enhance only fixes the wording.
What it never contains
The indexer drops credential-shaped files before anything is written: env files, .pem and .key files, and anything named credentials or containing "secret". See what is never indexed.
